Framing the Problem
A global drinks company wanted a repeatable way to stay ahead of fast-moving alcoholic and non-alcoholic RTD and spirits markets. The challenge was not simply to report trends, but to identify the white spaces with genuine growth potential and create a practical pipeline of opportunities the business could explore and innovate around. Each quarterly round was shaped around the client’s current strategic priorities, allowing the programme to flex with changing markets while maintaining a consistent innovation process.
Our Approach
We built an established research-to-strategy process that moved from broad cultural signals to specific innovation priorities. Each round began with deep desk research and social listening to map cultural shifts, category dynamics, emerging consumer mindsets and signals around new liquid formats. We then added expert perspective from people close to the category in each market, alongside on-the-ground cultural intelligence from local spotters. In-depth consumer interviews explored local drinking cultures, behaviours, unmet needs and gaps across alcoholic and non-alcoholic RTD. We synthesised the evidence into clear white-space territories, then ran strategic prioritisation sessions with the client to narrow these to the opportunities with the strongest fit and potential before deep-diving into applications.
The Breakthrough
The programme created an ongoing innovation engine rather than a one-off trends report. Across successive rounds in markets including the UK, France, South Africa, the US, Mexico, Canada, China, Korea and Australia, it has revealed priority white spaces and given the client a structured route from cultural foresight to innovation strategy. The process has informed successful RTD and brand-extension launches and, because it is repeated quarterly, allows the innovation pipeline to evolve as consumer culture and category dynamics change.
